Public Libraries for Mental Health

Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge reader and advocate for public libraries. Public libraries are an excellent resource for books, community events, public space, movies/music, and even tools to check out (https://www.instagram.com/p/ChFOQkFgJvf/?hl=en)! And it’s all freeeeee!

One of my favorite things about public libraries are the resources they provide to help our mental health. The type of offerings differ from each city as every public library has different funding, staff, and resources — so be sure to check out the resources to your particular town/city. Below I’m listing some of the resources the City of Austin has available:

🧘‍♀️1. Yoga and Wellness Offerings

City of Austin offers yoga classes (bilingual and body inclusive!) and other wellness offerings such as southbaths and healthy foods cooking classes. Finding movement in our bodies, music therapy, and feeding our bodies well can be impactful on our mental health. And these classes are free!

🤝 2. Building Community

Offerings around building community varies by branch but there are book clubs, teen clubs, plant/gardening clubs + classes, lego building classes, movie showings,  arts and crafts, and so much more. If you’re interested in building community around your interests, take advantage of the free events to meet other people who can become friends + community. Research shows friends + community can significantly impact our mental health and wellbeing (https://www.nami.org/family-member-caregivers/the-importance-of-community-and-mental-health/).

📚 3. Books on Mental Health

A public library would be nothing without its wonderful books. The library staff at City of Austin builds a list of books related to mental health in observance of Mental Health Awareness month in May. There are many genres of books that can bring us joy and ultimately help our mental health and wellbeing. But if you’re specifically seeking books on mental health, your library has got you covered.

🤲🏼 4. A Space For You

All public libraries have space for you to read, study, meet, and just hangout. If you need a space to exist outside of your work or home, the public library can be a great place to change up your routine. Third places (social environments that are not work or home) can be incredibly impactful to our sense of belonging. Most libraries have indoor and outdoor spaces, so take advantage of the spaces created for you and head to your public library!
